What is Health Coaching?

To learn what health coaching is, begin with the setting. 

  • Coaching may be delivered in a self-learning format, for example by email or a course. 
  • Another modality is via a group with several participants that move through a curriculum together.
  • Health coaching is typically provided one-to-one in person, online, or by phone.

Make a list of pros and cons about each type. Ask yourself, am I self-motivated and able to stick to a plan independently? Do you prefer social support in a community of people working toward the same goals? Or are you more private and prefer to talk about your health goals in a one-to-one conversation?

As you begin to clarify the setting, it's time to move to the next phase.

Health coaches are not a replacement for regular visits with your licensed healthcare provider, who assesses, diagnoses, and prescribes treatment.

Instead, health coaches provide a supportive, encouraging environment to reach your health and wellness goals (Purdue University)
