Choosing a healthy diet is as unique as you! Consider your preferences, allergies, intolerances, and your budget.
Special diets can be tricky and difficult to follow. Years of traditions, culture, preferences, cravings, and our favorite comfort foods all make sticking to a “diet” even more challenging.
So, how do we eat right?
If you’ve been feeling stuck in your journey with food, trying one diet after another, it may be because those diets don’t account for your tastes, lifestyle, or costs. The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all diet.
The mistake many people make is thinking that they can quickly get the results they want by revamping everything all at once. Making significant changes without a plan and strategy in place to sustain them is almost impossible.
Mindfulness is one of the steps toward changing behavior.
Recording your food in a journal will help you see your likes, dislikes, cravings, and motivations for eating. Take your time and be thoughtful with your entries. You’ll begin to see your relationship with food and self-evaluate your motivation to eat. Talk to a healthcare provider if you’re having difficulty with food.
How to get better numbers by eating right.
If you would like to reduce your BMI or waistline, following a portion control plan is the best option.
Losing weight will help with blood pressure control, as will salt reduction (read labels and hold off on the salt shaker). Walking at least 20 minutes several times a week is essential for heart health.
Exercise and proper dietary fat consumption may help your cholesterol, but your doctor may still recommend medication. If your triglycerides are elevated, you’ll need to address sugar intake (again, read labels).
In the case of diabetes and prediabetes, you’ll need to do all of the above - and may need to take medication as well. But don’t despair! You’ll still be able to prevent or postpone complications by closely adhering to a low-sugar, low-fat diet.

Prioritize yourself.
I hope you’ve scheduled an appointment with your healthcare provider, obtained your health numbers, and received advice on how to maintain or improve your health. You might be able to order your own lab work (check with your insurance first) while you wait for an appointment with your doctor.
Those who prioritize their own well-being are often the most vibrant. It’s not that they're selfish, far from it.
It’s because they put themselves first that they have vitality and FEEL GOOD, that they can do more for themselves and others, and enjoy life to the fullest. Granted, those people are few and far between, but why not be an outlier?
Your future self will really appreciate what you do for your body and mind NOW.
