I see people every day who are struggling with health problems. Their first concern is typically high blood pressure; then perhaps it's low energy levels or worries about their weight and its impact on their health.

Although most recognize the "need" to change their lifestyle, they often don't have the support needed to move the numbers in the right direction.

Year after year cholesterol, blood pressure, or blood sugar increases. Eventually, medication is indicated to control the numbers.

Whether you want to improve your health numbers, lose weight, increase your energy, or reduce your health risks, knowing your key health numbers can help.

What You Need To Do Now

First, determine a specific health goal. It can be to lower your blood sugar, improve your blood pressure, eat a healthy diet, or exercise more. Anything that you believe will move your health forward can be your starting point.

Next, journal your way to health. Track your health numbers, meals, water intake, exercise, and mood in one place. Use your own, or use the Get Better Numbers journal!

Schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to get your health numbers.

Numbers to ask about include:

  1. Your Blood Pressure (An average of 3 readings over time is more accurate than a single reading)
  2. Your Cholesterol (Total Cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Triglycerides)
  3. Your Blood Sugar (Blood Glucose or Hemoglobin A1C)
  4. Your BMI (Body Mass Index) - if you have an accurate weight and height, use this calculator
  5. Your Waist Circumference (you can get this on your own with a proper tape measure - here's how

As you complete these tasks, write down your numbers. This is your baseline from which you can track progress.

You may find your numbers are all in the normal range. This is fantastic! You will still benefit from following the Get Better Numbers series to improve your overall health and well-being.

Over our lifespan, things change. Aging, environmental changes, hormone fluctuations, genetics, and epigenetics all affect our health. As you can imagine, stress and activity levels also affect our physical and emotional health.

That’s why it's so important to start where you are, in good or poor health, to create habits that will keep you as alert, relaxed, rested, mobile, flexible, strong, and healthy as possible.
